Back in March, we posted about the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center's "Re-Imaging Appalachia" photography contest. Intended to dispel stereotypes of Appalachia – outhouses, tarpaper shacks, hillibllies – the contest sought "exciting and interesting photographs that challenge the standard notions of what it means to be Appalachian."
Now you can see the beautiful photos that made the finals. From back roads and fishing trips to ballet dancers and technology centers, these pictures capture Appalachian life beyond the cliches. The winner – whoever it may be – will take home $500. I'm not a judge, but you can see some of my favorites below the cut.
