By patrickweaver • Jan 22nd, 2012 • Category: AMI Blog, Patrick's Rock Climbing Blog

Despite the rain and unusual weather Hogan and I had a great time climbing on the South Face of Looking Glass Rock.  Most of the rock was wet, however Second Coming was dry.  We had climbed multipitch before, but this was Hogan first time with double ropes.  It took a while to get use to [...]

Ice climbing at 215

By patrickweaver • Jan 15th, 2012 • Category: AMI Blog, Patrick's Rock Climbing Blog

I had a great day climbing with David.  You can see great photos on the Citizen Times website.  We enjoyed some great ice condition.  It was not thick ice but super technical.  Thin ice is more about precise placements and delicate axe swings or “pecking”.  Hooks and foot switches also make up the type of [...]

Climbing the Nose

By patrickweaver • Nov 9th, 2011 • Category: AMI Blog, Patrick's Rock Climbing Blog

Today was one of those rare days where everything seems to go well.  I was fortunate enough to climb with Warren.  He wanted to climb the Nose on Looking Glass Rock.  It is one of those must do classics in the area.  The Nose was the first route on this section of rock and follows [...]

I was fortunate enough to work with a great group of people this weekend for a Rock Intro Class.  We had great weather and a fantastic day climbing and enjoying the fall color.  Everyone experienced a rappel and  climbing in the Pisgah Forest.  The blue skies and fall color made the views fantastic.  The real [...]

The Trifecta

By patrickweaver • Sep 18th, 2010 • Category: AMI Blog, Patrick's Rock Climbing Blog

The Trifecta
[in sing. ] a run of three wins or grand events: today is a trifecta of climbing.
I have been climbing over 23 years now, and it seems my climbing is come full circle.   In my early stages of climbing, I sought climbing as a means of reaching lofty summits or as a way of [...]

Climbing at Laurel Knob

By patrickweaver • May 22nd, 2010 • Category: AMI Blog

On Thursday, our only day off from work, the weather coalesced as it seldom does when climbing big walls with a date constraint. Patrick Weaver, our friend Ron and my girlfriend Shaunna drove to the Panthertown trail head.
We, perhaps, took a little too much time in the morning and did not get to the parking [...]

Ice climbing with Elizabeth

By patrickweaver • Mar 25th, 2010 • Category: Ice Climbing Blog, Patrick's Rock Climbing Blog

Elizabeth from Florida decided to take plunge into the world of climbing frozen waterfalls.  Elizabeth, an avid rock climber, spent the day with me and Tim climbing ice near the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.  The conditions were fantastic as the tempers had warmed up, but the ice was in great condition.
We started with [...]

Ed and Stephan
I climbed with Ed and Stephan today.  Ed and Stephan are from the Atlanta area and came up to do some ice climbing.  Ed has done some alpine climbing but was new to waterfall ice climbing.  Stephan had experience climbing both alpine and waterfall ice, evident by the old ice tools.  He even [...]
