AMGA SPI Exam at the New May 1-2

AMI and the New River Mountain Guides teamed up again for a fun and informative SPI exam last weekend. Although the exam originally had six individuals, one person had to leave due to a family emergency. All of us on the exam wish Al and Kim the best through this challenge.

This was a fun exam and we had a great time working the different locations. The participants were quite strong climbers and had their skills dialed. Robby was enjoyable to watch climb, his movement skills were polished to perfection. Jay kept the group entertained with this wit and snappy remarks. His also dazzled the group with a lesson on the clove hitch that was well beyond what I had every seen. Good job! Adam did a great job keeping his cool, or maybe he is the most laid back person I have met.

Leah earned kudos with a single rope rappel system set up the was as dialed as it could be. This still didn’t stop Jay from making a remark or two, but Leah kept it in total control. Paul worked the crowd like any veteran teacher would, he relaxed everyone and had them thinking out of the box.

Women’s Retreat

The course for May 8-10th in Brevard NC is full. It looks to be a great course with a strong line up of individuals on the course. The weather should be workable on Saturday with sunny skies rolling in for the rest of the course.

April Climbing Courses at AMI

This April AMI will be offering climbing course for those individuals who want to have a fun time learning how to climb.

AMI Anchoring Clinic

The AMI Anchoring Clinic will be on April 10th. This course is design for anyone who wants to learn how or improve his or her skills at building rock anchors for top roping, leading or multipitch climbing. You have fun learning how select and place climbing gear, build anchors using a variety of methods and extending anchors for setting up top ropes from climbing gear or natural anchors. This is a detailed course, and will have something for beginners to advanced climber wanting to expand their skills in anchor rigging.

Cost:$85 per person for two or more, $190 private.

Self Rescue 1

Your partner is stuck, now what? Ever had the sinking feeling that you might not be able to help your partner is something goes wrong? This course teaches the basics of self rescue and prepare one for dealing with emergencies related to single pitch environments. How to you prevent accidents? What if your need to go get the leader? How do I deal with a stuck climber? This is a fun class the prepares one for being a safer partner.

Tuition: $95

Rock Intro Course for beginning climbers Oct 3rd and 4th

This course is for beginning climbers or people who have never climbed before. This is a two day course for a complete introduction to climbing. You’ll learn equipment, safety systems, climbing movement and more.

LNT For Climbers Sept 5th and 6th

AMI is hosting a LNT trainer course an workshop for climbers. Leave No Trace is a wilderness ethic that promotes sustainable practices in the wilderness. Future access for climbers depends on our actions. Learn what you can do to help out.

Dates: September 5th for the workshop, 5th and 6th for the LNT trainer course.

Cost: $20 for workshop and $65 for trainer course

Davidson River Clean up October 3rd

Concerned about the trash and waste left behind over the summer? Want to do something but not sure how? Come and join us for a river clean up on October 3rd. The Davidson river is one of the most heavily used areas in the Pisgah National Forest. Visitors from all around come and spend time along this beautiful stretch of the forest. There are 18 pull offs along the river, including the Sycamore Flats and Coon tree picnic areas. This summer a group of volunteers removed about a dozen bags of trash along the riverside and we were able to visit only 4 locations along the Davidson. This October let try to reach more, come and join in and help out.
