Boy Scouts Climbing Merit Badge
Appalachian Mountain Institute has always recognized the virtues of the Boy Scouts of America. During our rock climbing programs, we have consistently witnessed both prior and active Boy Scouts as being assertive, good leaders, good communicators, and possessive of a good attitude for learning. With that being said, AMI is always welcome to help the Brevard and Asheville North Carolina area Boy Scout Troops in earning their Climbing Merit Badge. AMI employs a BSA level II certified climbing director, who is experienced in facilitating the instruction for the Climbing Merit Badge.
AMI offers two formats for Climbing Merit Badge instruction:
One-Day Climbing Merit Badge Program –
- Participants will complete the three climbs, three belays, and three rappels requirements.
- Prerequisites:
- Leave No Trace ethics
- Climber’s First Aid
- Difficulty grades of climbing
- Climbing communications
- Rope handling skills used in climbing (proper rope coiling)
- Knots used in climbing
All of the information needed on the prerequisites can be found in the Climbing Merit Badge pamphlet or other online sources. Having a prior knowledge of belay skills is beneficial to the outing (get to climb more), but is not necessary.
Two-Day Climbing Merit Badge Program –
- There is no prior instruction or prerequisites needed.
- Participants will complete all requirements for the merit badge with AMI.
- The first day will focus on all of the prerequisite skills needed and rappelling.
- The second day will be spent using their learned skills to facilitate a day of rock climbing.

- Venturing Mountaineering Award
- BSA Climbing Instructor training
- Anchor building
- Sport lead climbing
- Group Ice climbing
The only equipment the participant needs is their 10 Essentials. The unit does not need any climbing equipment. All climbing equipment is provided by AMI.

- AMI will provide all climbing equipment
- Programs can be arranged year round
- Programs can be provided throughout Western North Carolina.
