Presentation at the International AEE Conference
This workshop is designed to provide assistance to participants wanting to enhance their risk management systems. The workshop will be conducted in a series of mini session each with a specific focus designed to improve risk management for outdoor programming.
The first full session will cover the following: Creating a Risk Management System for Adventure Programming.—This presentation will focus on development or revision of a risk management system for adventure based programs or programs seeking AEE accreditation. It begins with the development of protocols and procedures for your organization. The topics include: how to write protocols, which areas to address, and how to organize the information. It will also address the needs of an emergency response plan by focusing on the key elements that need to be developed. Final considerations will include developing staffs’ skills and judgment, and protocol implementation.

Bio’s
Bio for Ali Lien–Ali pursues several professional endeavors in the outdoor and experiential education fields. Ali is an adjunct professor with Brevard College’s Wilderness Leadership & Experiential Education (WLEE) department and is an advisor for Prescott College’s Master of Arts Program in Adventure Educaiton. Before joining the WLEE faculty, Ali coordinated the Project Worth program at Camp Greenville for several years. She’s also been an instructor / trip leader with over ten programs on both the east and west coast, including two years as an Americorps volunteer in Kentucky. A graduate of the Prescott College Master of Arts Program, Ali is currently working with a colleague to establish a not-for-profit organization. This organization, Mountain Roots, Inc., is an outdoor education and retreat center with a focus on environmentally responsible (i.e. sustainable) and community-centered living in the Hickory Nut Gorge (south of Asheville, NC).
Bio for Patrick Weaver– Patrick Weaver holds a MA from Prescott College in Risk Management in Adventure Education and is a current American Mountain Guides Certified Rock Instructor. Patrick performs accreditation reviews for the AEE and serves on the AMGA Accreditation Committee. He owns and operates Appalachian Mountain Institute, an instructional service that conducts AMGA Single Pitch Instructor courses and exams, staff training and rock and ice guiding. Patrick also works as the risk management coordinator for the Asheville School Mountaineering Program.
