South American expedition with Jim

If there was a more fun loving adventuresome individual than Jim Toman, I would be surprised.  Jim is a NC native from Morganton NC and has enjoyed a lifetime of exploring the cliffs and rivers of NC and beyond.  He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in International Studies and Political Science in 2006.  During this time he attended a cultural immersion program in Ecuador for an extended time abroad.

Jim has spent a significant amount of time guiding kayaking, climbing and backing packing trips across the country.  Beyond this Jim worked as a naturalist at the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii.  Jim has also worked with middle and high school students for the High Rock LEAP program.  Jim’s passion for these positions comes from his desire to work with people.

Jim’s other passion is climbing.  Jim has spent over 10 years climbing around North Carolina and beyond.  In NC, Jim has climbed such classics as Linn Cove Lullaby at Ship Rock, Shredded Wheat at Rumbling Bald, Gemini at Looking Glass Rock, and Grover at Laurel Knob.  His exploits extend into Wind River Wyoming, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Tetons Mountains, and Ragged Range Northwest Territories.  These expeditions have extended internationally to Canada, Chile and Argentina.  In Chile, Jim put up several first ascents including, Mal Psicologa 5.11, Septima Dia 5.11 and Lithium 5.10.  These routes represent remote climbs on rock over 400+ meters.

Jim is great to work with; his philosophy on guiding can be summed up as a lifelong dream.  “Guiding is, however, a way for me to express my love for the outdoors, which I would like to impress on others”, Jim Toman.

Other interest of Jim include kayaking white water around the rivers of NC, trail running and mountain biking.  As of lately, Jim has developed a keen interest in fly fishing and all of the challenges of this subtle game.

It was a great experience and the trip was just what I was looking for and needed for my vacation. Thanks for the memories!
