Community Outreach
At Appalachian Mountain Institute our mission embodies a commitment to the community. Our community is the people around us and the wonderful wilderness we have to play in. Part of our time and resources is directed towards making positive changes in people and places in and around Brevard and Asheville, North Carolina. AMI accomplishes this by getting involved in programs for people as well as organizing diverse community activities directed at cleaning up the wilderness.
Adventure for Kids Program

Climbing Toward Confidence
AMI recognizes the value of the wilderness experience, especially with the youth. That is why AMI has the Adventure for Kids Program. With this program, we partner with youth programs that benefit from taking kids into the wilderness. To learn more, please visit Adventure for Kids or make a donation to help fund this program.
Stewardship
Appalachian Mountain Institute benefits from individuals who take pride in the local forest. As rock climbers, we have a deep appreciation of the wilderness. However, the greatest needs do not reside at cliff side. Pisgah Forest is home to the Davidson River, and is the most visited location in all the forest. This can lead to overuse in the form of trash.
Twice now, the climbing guides at AMI have lead river clean ups. Cleaning not just along the road but at the riverbank where the unseen trash is found. I am proud of the efforts these guides have made, but I am equally impressed by the overwhelming community support for this project. You can read about the clean ups on the AMI blog.
AMI has also helped the Carolina Climbers Coalition. This has been possible by direct donations and by providing certificates for free guided climbing for fund raisers at various events. AMI co-sponsored the Bachar Slide Show, a direct fund raiser at Inner Peaks, and several others, which amounts to over $1000.00 on contributions. This is a small amount, but it helps move the mission forward.
American Foundation for Children with AIDS
AMI also has help raise funds for the Climb Up so kids can grow up program. This program raise funds for purchasing medicine for children with aids.
